On July 31st 2009 our lives were forever changed. Our son Kevin suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a freak skateboarding accident. The accident left Kevin unconscious and for over 10 years we cared for him at home. Kevin passed in April of 2020. We were truly blessed by his life both before and after the accident. It was the prayers and support of friends, family and the faithful that gave us the strength to make the journey. If you’d like additional information regarding Kevin’s Journey of Hope, please visit www.kevinsjoh.com.
Prayer was an essential part of Kevin’s Journey right from the start. We called it “Storming Heaven for Kevin.” This book is a collection of the various prayers that fed our hearts, minds and souls on the Journey of Hope. I have thought much about prayer over the years since the accident. Early on our prayers were very much one directional and “outcome base”, essentially, GOD PLEASE HEAL KEVIN. Over time, our prayers became more two-way and “relational based”, a conversation with our all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, eternal and loving Creator. It blows one’s mind when we think about it in those terms. Good conversations require that the involved parties alternate speaking and listening, so at the end of each prayer pause for a moment and listen for a response. You might be surprised with what you hear. I have often thought that part of Kevin’s legacy is that he motivated people to pray, and without ever saying a word Kevin made an introduction between the people he loves and the God he adores; a match made in heaven. During the Lent of 2011 we tried to post a prayer or Scriptural passage each day to a web-site called CaringBridge. Consistent with the Journey of Hope model we focused our communication to Kevin in daily entries. Below is an entry that provides some context for the Journey of Hope Prayer Book.
Hi Kev, Last night I was up late searching the internet for new prayer ideas. I figured if we want to communicate with God, and ask for your healing, it might be a good idea to better understand His language. There are clearly many types of prayer. Here are some ideas from the experts.
"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look towards heaven; it is a cry of recognition and love; embracing both trial and joy." - St. Therese of Lisieux
“In the darkness of your worst moments, when you were alone and persecuted, you found God. Help me to have faith that God is there especially in the times when God seems absent and far away. Amen” - Saint John of the Cross
“If we really want prayer, we’ll have to give it time. We must slow down to a human tempo and we’ll begin to have time to listen. And, as soon as we listen to what’s going on, things will begin to take shape by themselves”. - Thomas Merton We have indexed the Journey of Hope Prayer Book into the following categories:

Prayers for a Miracle and Healing
1. Miracles and Healing – Prayer for a Creative Miracle Hi Kev,
What better time to pray for a miracle than during Lent.
God of all creation, You who spoke a simple command and brought forth light from the darkness, we call upon You now to send forth Your miracle-working power into (your loved one’s name). In the same way that You spoke unto the dust of the ground when You created humankind in Your own image, we ask You to send forth Your healing power into their body. Send forth Your word and command every cell, electrical and chemical impulse, tissue, joint, ligament, organ, gland, muscle, bone and every molecule in their body to come under complete and perfect health, strength, alignment, and balance.
It is through You that we live and move and have our being. With every breath we take, we live under Your life-giving grace. We ask You to touch them now with the same miracle-working power that You used when You fashioned them inside their mother’s womb. As surely as You have created us in Your image and likeness, You can also recreate them now and restore them to health.
Please fill them with Your healing power. Cast out all that should not be inside of them. We ask You to mend all that is broken, root out every sickness and disease, open all blocked arteries and veins, restore all internal organs, rebuild damaged tissues, remove all inflammation and cleanse them of all infections, viruses and destructive bacteria. Let the warmth of Your healing love flood their entire being, so that their body will function the way it was created to be, whole and complete, renewed in Your perfect health. We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
2. Miracles and Healing – I Believe (Kevin’s Prayer) Hi Kev, This is a prayer that I wrote for you called “I Believe”.
Dear Lord, Prior to raising Lazarus, You said to the faithful, "Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?" I believe that You alone have the power to heal. I believe because my God is an awesome God, Who reigns from Heaven above with wisdom, power and love. I ask You through the intercession of the angels, saints and the faithful on earth; to restore (loved one’s name) to full health this day. Why Lord? Because I believe You alone can heal. Why Lord? So the glory of God can be seen.
I believe, Mary Mother of God pray for us I believe, St. Joseph pray for us I believe, St Joan of Arc pray for us I believe, St Michael the Arc Angel pray for I believe, St Leo the Great pray for us I believe, St John de La Salle pray for us I believe, St Augustine pray for us I believe, St Rose of Lima pray for us I believe, St. Theresa of Calcutta pray for us I believe, Padre Pio pray for us I believe, Blessed Pierre Giorgio pray for us I believe, St. Pope John Paul II pray for us – Amen
3. Miracles and Healing – Intercession of the Blessed Mother Hi Kev, Today and for the next several days we will focus our prayers to the Blessed Mother. She encouraged her son to perform His first miracle at the wedding at Cana. We will ask her to intercede on your behalf. The Blessed Mother, more than any of the saints, seems to spend time here on earth; Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, Medjugorje, etc. We’ll take a look at some of the prayers the Blessed Mother has left with us over the years. Let’s ask her to intercede with her Son on our behalf.
O Most Blessed Mother, Heart of love, heart of mercy, ever listening, caring, consoling, hear our prayer. As your children, we implore your intercession with Jesus Your Son. Receive with understanding and compassion the petitions we place before you today,
We are comforted in knowing your heart is ever open to those who ask for your prayer. We trust to your gentle care and intercession, those whom we love and who are sick or lonely or hurting. Help all of us, Holy Mother, to bear our burdens in this life until we may share eternal life and peace with God forever. Amen.
4. Miracles and Healing – Miraculous Medal Hi Kev, For years I used to wear a Miraculous Medal, but not until recently did I understand the story behind it. In 1830 the Blessed Mother appeared to St Catherine. Here, in St Catherine’s own words is a description of the medal the Blessed Mother requested.
A frame formed around the Blessed Virgin. Within it was written in letters of gold: ‘O Mary, conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee.’ Then the voice said: “Have a Medal struck after this model. All who wear it will receive great graces; they should wear it around the neck.” At this instant the tableau seemed to turn, and I beheld the reverse of the Medal; a large M surmounted by a bar and a cross; beneath the M were the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the one crowned with thorns, the other pierced with a sword.”
The Medal was made according to Our Lady’s design and innumerable miracles followed until the Medal of the Immaculate Conception became known as the Miraculous Medal. Last night I found a Miraculous Metal in my bedroom. I'm sure it must have been there for some time, but I hadn't noticed it. You can bet I'll be wearing it from now on.
5. Miracles and Healing – Our Lady of Fatima Hi Kev, When we lived in Piscataway our parish was Our Lady of Fatima and you went to school there. In 1917 the Blessed Mother appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal. Many miracles have happed in Fatima since. This prayer is called the Angel Prayer. An Angel told the three children at Fatima to say this prayer prior to making petitions to Jesus and Mary.
“Don't be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me." He then knelt on the ground, bending forward until his forehead touched it, and prayed: "My God, I believe, I adore, and I love You! I beg pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You!"
He said this prayer three times. When he stood, he then said to the children: "Pray thus. The hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications." He left the children who then began to say this prayer frequently.
6. Miracles and Healing – Our Lady of Guadalupe Hi Kev, Today I went to a Church in Iselin called St Cecilia. On my way out I found a prayer card at the holy water fountain. I figured this must be the prayer to post for today.
Eternal Father, Source of Life, open our hearts to see and desire the beauty of Your plan for life and love. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that our love will be generous and self-giving, and we may be blessed with joy. Grant us great trust in Your mercy. Forgive us for not receiving Your gift of life and heal us from the effects of the culture of death. Instill in us and in all people a sense for the sacredness of every human life. Inspire our efforts to protect and care for the most vulnerable, especially unborn children, pregnant women, the sick and the elderly. Strengthen us in the hope that with You nothing is impossible. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who by his Cross makes all things new. Amen Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Life, pray for us.
Not until your accident did I understand the culture of death reference in this prayer. Many times, along the journey Mom and I were advised that we could legally let your life end; by not doing the initial surgery, by not putting in a trache, by not putting in a feeding tube. We knew the odds were against us, but look how far you have come. Look at all the hearts and minds you have converted in the process. We thank God every day for the gift of your life.
7. Miracles and Healing – Sacred Heart of Jesus Hi Kev, Prayer cards just keep showing up everywhere. I thought this prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus would be a good prayer for today.
Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to You. Allow Your healing hand to heal me. Touch my soul with Your compassion for others. Touch my heart with Your courage and infinite love for all. Touch my mind with Your wisdom, that my mouth may always proclaim Your praise. Teach me to reach out to You in my need, And help me to lead others to You by my example. Most loving Heart of Jesus, bring me health in body and spirit, That I may serve You with all my strength. Touch gently this life which You have created, now and forever. Amen
8. Miracles and Healing – Intercession of St. Padre Pio Hi Kev, When you were in the hospital you had many people send you prayers and religious articles from St. Padre Pio. Padre Pio was a priest from San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. He was blessed by God in many wonderful and mysterious ways. The most dramatic was the stigmata. Padre Pio bore the wounds of Christ for fifty years! Among his other gifts were bilocation, prophecy, conversion, reading of souls, and miraculous cures. People are still being cured through his intercession in ways that cannot be explained by medicine or science. We continue to pray to Padre Pio for a healing miracle.
Dear God, You generously blessed Your servant, St. Pio of Pietrelcina, with the gifts of the Spirit. You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son. Endowed with the gift of discernment, St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional for the salvation of souls. With reverence and intense devotion in the celebration of Mass, he invited countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Through the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, I confidently beseech You to grant us the grace for healing, Amen.

9. Favorites – Thomas Merton Prayer Hi Kev, Here is today's Lenten prayer. It's one of my favorites. When I was about your age, I had a serious eye accident that left me blind in my right eye. Things were very uncertain while I went through a series of eye operations.
During Lent that year I was in church and found this prayer on a small piece of paper in the pew in front of me. I kept it in my wallet for years not knowing the author and finally one day the paper was crumbling so I decided to look it up on the internet and found it was a famous prayer by Thomas Merton. Since your accident we again are in very uncertain times and once again this prayer brings me comfort.
My Lord God I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, And the fact that I think I am following your will, Does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that my desire to please You does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this You will lead me by the right road, Though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust You always, Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for You are ever with me, And you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
10. Favorites – Carrying the Cross Hi Kev, I have a CBA poster in my office that I look at every day. As a senior you were selected to carry the cross and lead the procession of seniors as they entered the gym for graduation. In the center of the poster is a picture of you carrying that cross. It seems both eerie and prophetic. Mom sent me this prayer to say during Lent.
Lord Jesus, In Your most difficult hour, You asked your friends to watch and pray with You. We pray now for the courage to remain faithful to You, Surrounded as we are by the difficulties of our own lives. Help us to learn from You what it means to take up our cross each day and to seek the will of the Father. As our Lenten prayer and action bring us closer to You, Open our eyes to the gift of Your saving grace in our lives. We ask this in Your most holy name.Amen.
11. Favorites – Intercession of St Joseph Hi Kev, Today is the feast day of St. Joseph. I can’t imagine the emotions St Joseph must have felt being the earthly father and protector of Jesus; all the decisions he had to make and discernment of what best way to care for Jesus especially in his early years. We pray for his intercession today to his Son to help protect you and our family and friends.
St. Joseph, who felt the tribulation and worry of a parent when the child Jesus was lost, protect our dear children for time and eternity. May you be their father and counselor. Let them, like Jesus, grow in age as well as in wisdom and grace before God and men. Preserve them from the corruption of his world, and give us the grace one day to be united with them in Heaven forever. Amen
12. Favorites – Prayer of St Augustine Hi Kev It looks like we’ll have another Wildcat in the family. Dylan has decided to follow in your footsteps and go to Villanova for Engineering. Villanova was founded by the Augustinians so today’s prayer will be one from St Augustine.
Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give Your angels and saints charge over those who sleep. Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest Your weary ones. Bless Your dying ones. Soothe Your suffering ones. Pity Your afflicted ones. Shield Your joyous ones, and all for Your love's sake. Amen.
13. Favorites – The Godfather Prayer, Father Rafael Hi Kev I was looking at some old e-mails and I came across a prayer that Father Rafael, your Godfather, wrote for you shortly after your accident.
Heavenly Father, We pray to You as peoples of many traditions uniting our voices in one holy prayer. We draw together to pray for Kevin. Never did we realize how closely, Lord, You caress him. Presently he seems merely asleep, but You have taught us now how completely and mysteriously he rests in Your loving hands. Each of his breaths is a gift from You. Continue to sustain him with Your miraculous healing power.Bless him with Your love. Ease any pain inflicting him, and fill his soul with Your consolation.
Remember all who love Kevin, both his immediate and extended family. Give them the strength forged by passion to care for each other. Provide them with courage to face whatever the future holds. And though they may at times tread in darkness, supply them with an abundance of hope that enlightens each of their steps.
Lord, continue to surround them with the love and support of family and friends, as You \ do at this moment. Our gratitude is our gift to You, Lord. We thank You for Kevin’s presence. We all were and remain blessed with the gift of Kevin’s simple goodness. We offer appreciation to You for gathering us as brothers and sisters of one family filled with thanksgiving in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen
14. Favorites – Blessed Pierre Giorgio, The Man of the Beatitudes Hi Kev, Another holy man that we have met along the journey is Blessed Pierre Giorgio Frassati. You remind me so much of him. He was trained to be an engineer, but God had a different calling for him. He was born in 1901 in Turin, Italy. Pierre Giorgio was a handsome young man who loved to be in the mountains, climbing and skiing with friends.
The internet said “Young people today who are looking for a role model will find someone to identify with in this vibrant young outdoorsman who combined a deep love for Christ, a desire to serve the needy, and a mission to imbue society and politics with Christian ideal.”
One of his quotes sounds like something you wrote in your journal “To live without faith, without having something to defend, without a steady struggle for truth, that is not living, but existing.”
They called Pierre Giorgio “The Man of the Beatitudes” because he was so generous to the needy. So today let’s reflect on the Beatitudes.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
15. Favorites – Novena to Blessed Pierre Giorgio
DAY 1 Jesus says: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Pier Giorgio's words: “The faith given to me in Baptism surely suggests to me that of yourself you will do nothing; but if you have God as the center of all your actions, then you will reach the goal.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, help us to keep You at the center of our actions, because only then can we reach our goal.
DAY 2 Jesus says: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Pier Giorgio's words: “Our life has been a continual sacrifice. But this is not difficult, if one thinks what these few years passed in suffering are, compared with eternal happiness where joy will have no measure or end, and where we shall have unimaginable peace.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, we offer our suffering and our sadness as a continual sacrifice towards eternal happiness.
DAY 3 Jesus says: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Pier Giorgio's words: “With violence you sow hatred, and you harvest its bad fruits. With charity, you sow peace among men – not the peace that the world gives, but the true peace that only faith in Jesus Christ can give us in common brotherhood.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, grant us peace and patience as we navigate this journey.
DAY 4 Jesus says: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Pier Giorgio's words: “What wealth it is to be in good health, as we are! But we have the duty of putting our health at the service of those who do not have it. To act otherwise would be to betray that gift of God.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, show us how to be of service towards others, especially those who do not have good health.
DAY 5 Jesus says: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Pier Giorgio's words: “St. Paul says that “the charity of Christ urges us.” Without this flame, which should burn out our personality little by little and blaze only for other people’s griefs, we would not be Christian, let alone Catholic.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, help us to show mercy in words and deeds.
DAY 6 Jesus says: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Pier Giorgio's words: “I beg you to pray for me a little, so that God may give me an iron will that does not bend and does not fail in His projects.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, please help us to be good examples so that we can build up God’s Kingdom.
DAY 7 Jesus says: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” Pier Giorgio's words: “I offer you my best wishes – or, rather, only one wish, but the only wish that a true friend can express for a dear friend: may the peace of the Lord be with you always! For, if you possess peace every day, you will be truly rich.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, may the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all.
DAY 8 Jesus says: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Pier Giorgio's words: “To live without faith, without a patrimony to defend, without a steady struggle for truth – that is not living, but existing.” PRAY: Dear Lord,by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, guide us to be courageous and stand up for Your truth.
DAY 9 Jesus says: “Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.” Pier Giorgio's words: “We who by the grace of God are Catholics must steel ourselves for the battle we shall certainly have to fight to fulfill our program and to give our country, in the not-too-distant future, happier days and a morally healthy society. But to achieve this we need constant prayer to obtain from God that grace without which all our powers are useless.” PRAY: Dear Lord, by the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio, grant us Your grace to respect all life no matter how young and what condition.
16. Favorites – Christian Brothers Prayer Hi Kev, I don't envy those who write a daily column for a newspaper. It's hard to come up with something on a daily basis. Today is a no-brainer since today is the feast day of St John Baptist de La Salle. He was the founder of the Christian Brothers so that makes today’s prayer easy. CBA is so much a part of your life. I love what you wrote about CBA on your college essay.
” The single, greatest experience that affected my life was my education at Christian Brothers Academy. Although I did not know it right away, my life was changed the day I entered CBA.”
I bet that’s exactly what St John Baptist de La Salle had hoped to accomplish when he founded the Christian Brothers. Here is our prayer for today.
St John Baptist de La Salle Pray for us Live Jesus in our heartsforever.
General Prayers
17. General Prayers – Prayer of Thanksgiving 1 Hi Kev, If this journey has taught us anything, it is to make the most of each day that God gives us. . God of my life, I welcome this new day. It is Your gift to me, the first day of the rest of my life. I thank you for the gift of being alive this morning. I thank you for the sleep which has refreshed me. I thank you for the chance to begin life all over again. Lord, this day is full of promise and opportunity. Help me to waste none of it. This day is full of mystery and the unknown. Help me to face it without fear or anxiety. This day is full of beauty and adventure. Help me to be fully alive to it all. Amen
18. General Prayers – Prayer of Thanksgiving 2 Hi Kev, Today is a beautiful day outside. I thought it would be a good idea to just stop and thank God for all our blessings. I found this prayer of gratitude on the web.
Thank You, Father, for having created us and given us to each other in the human family. Thank You for being with us in all our joys and sorrows, for Your comfort in our sadness, Your companionship in our loneliness. Thank You for yesterday, today, tomorrow and for the whole of our lives. Thank You for friends, for health and for grace. May we live this and every day conscious of all that has been given to us. Amen
19. General Prayers – Prayer for Forgiveness Hi Kev, In today's prayer we will focus on confessing our sins and asking for forgiveness.
I confess to almighty God, And to you my brothers and sisters, That I have sinned through my own fault, In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done, and in what I have failed to do, And I ask the Blessed Mary, ever virgin, All the Angels and Saints, and you my brothers and sisters, To pray for me to the Lord our God. Amen
20. General Prayers – Prayer for Forgiveness, Act of Contrition Hi Kev, Today is Palm Sunday. We plan to get you involved in many of the Holy Week services this week. I hope you'll be up to it. In preparation for Holy Week let's again ask for God's forgiveness.
Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, And I detest all my sins because of Your just punishments, But most of all because they offend You my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen
21. General Prayers – Prayer for Patience Hi Kev, Patience has never been my strong suite. Here's our prayer for today.
Lord, teach me to be patient - with life, with people, and with myself. I sometimes try to hurry things along too much, and I push for answers before the time is right. Teach me to trust Your sense of timing rather than my own and to surrender my will to Your greater and wiser plan. Help me let life unfold slowly, like the small rosebud whose petals unravel bit by bit, and remind me that in hurrying the bloom along, I destroy the bud and much of the beauty therein. Instead, let me wait for all to unfold in its own time. Each moment and state of growth contains a loveliness. Teach me to slow down enough to appreciate life and all it holds. Amen.
Scriptural Reflections
22. Scripture – “All Things are Possible with God” Hi Kev I picked this passage from the Gospel Mark for today. Of course, I put myself in the place of the father of the boy who needs healing. Jesus gives him the opportunity to heal his son if he believes. I especially love the father's response. "I do believe". Then he realizes he is speaking with Jesus and had better come clean. "Help me with my unbelief". Later in the passage the disciples can't figure out why they can't heal the boy and Jesus says “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.” It’s something for us all to think about during Lent.
Mark 9:24-29 - All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.” After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!” But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up. When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, “Why could we not drive it out?” And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”
23. Scripture – “Stairway to Heaven” Hi Kev, For today's Lenten prayer I thought we should think about the Gospel reading for today. It tells us how to get to heaven. That's something we probably don't think about enough.
Matthew 25:24-40 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mime, you did for me.’
There are a lot of people Kevin that are dedicated to your care, physically and spiritually. I guess in some way you're are helping us all get to heaven.
24. Scripture – “Ask and You Shall Receive” Hi Kev, God knows what we need before we ask for it, but we will keep asking anyway. I know when your siblings want something from me, they can be relentless. We will be relentless in our prayers for your healing. Here is today’s Gospel reading.
Matthew 7:7-12 - Jesus said to his disciples: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asked for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asked for a fish?If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good thingsto those who ask him.“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.”
25. Scripture – The Story of Lazarus Hi Kev, Today’s Gospel was the story of Lazarus. I couldn’t stop thinking about these lines in Scripture. For the first time I imagined the story through the eyes of Martha and Mary, the sisters of Lazarus. How difficult the waiting must have been for them. After several days Jesus comes and raises Lazarus from the dead so the Glory of God can be seen. Martha and Mary knew that Jesus loved Lazarus. They believed that he was the Messiah, but they couldn’t have ever imagined the miracle that was about to occur.
John 11:3-4The sisters of Lazarus sent word to Jesus, saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.”When Jesus heard this, he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God.”
26. Scripture – St Paul’s Description of Love Hi Kev Today I am reminded of St Paul’s beautiful description of perfect love. The real wonder of heaven is in the last several lines. I had to underlined them.
1 Cor 13:4-13 - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
27. Scripture – “The Lord is My Shepherd” Hi Kev, At Church today we heard the story of how God chose David to be his servant and lead the Jewish people. He was not the likely choice since David had many older and stronger brothers. It made me think of how God has chosen you for this journey and how you are having such a powerful impact on people's lives although I have to admit the phrase from the bible "Let this cup pass from me" comes to mind. The psalm from today's mass is psalm 23, so we'll make that the prayer for today.
Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever
28. Scripture – Suffering Servant Hi Kev, Tomorrow starts the Holy Triduum; Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter. This time of year, I usually break out the move “Jesus of Nazareth”. It’s probably my favorite movie and in my opinion the best Jesus film ever made. It was directed by Fellini with an incredible cast, Robert Powell, Michael York, Christopher Plumber, Anne Bancroft, Olivia Hussey, James Mason … the list goes on. One scene I’ll never forget is when Nicodemus played by Sir Lawrence Oliver recites the following passage from the Book of Isaiah as he watches the ancient Scriptures unfold. It puts me in the right frame of mind for Easter. Kev, let’s you and I watch Jesus of Nazareth together tonight.
The Suffering Servant: Isiah 25:1-10 Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth; there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, nor appearance that would attract us to him. He was spurned and avoided by people, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom people hide their faces, spurned, and we held him in no esteem. Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; but the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all. Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth. Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away, and who would have thought any more of his destiny? When he was cut off from the land of the living, and smitten for the sin of his people, a grave was assigned him among the wicked and a burial place with evildoers, though he had done no wrong nor spoken any falsehood. But the LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity. If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him.
Greatest Hits / Oldies but Goodies
29. Greatest Hits – The Our Father Hi Kev, Today’s Gospel reading gets down to the most essential elements of prayer (Praise, Promise, Petition, Penance and Protection). It is the Perfect Prayer and in so few words praises God, promises us His kingdom, petitions Him to satisfy our most basic needs, asks Him for forgiveness and penance, and requests protection from evil. What more do we need?
“In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.Do not be like them.Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This is how you are to pray:” Matthew 6:7
Praise: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Promise: Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Petition: Give us this day our daily bread, Penance: And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; Protection: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
30. Greatest Hits – The Hail Mary Hi Kev Today is also the feast of the Annunciation. That means just nine months until Christmas. Yesterday we were reminded that the Blessed Mother first appeared to Maria Esperanza on March 25th in 1976. We have a special devotion to Maria Esperanza. We attended the start of her beatification process at the Cathedral in Metuchen last year. One of her contemporaries has come to pray for you and with you on a number of occasions.
Luke 1:26-31 - The angel Gabriel was sent from God, to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus, Holy Mary mother of God, pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen
31. Greatest Hits – The Shema Hi Kev I stopped by the CBA chapel this morning on my way to work. Once again, I gazed up at the stained-glass window of a young, thin, red haired boy that Jesus is comforting and I thought of you. As I was leaving the chapel, I saw your brother Dylan in the hallway and thought about what a fine young man he has become.
After hearing today’s readings,I thought it would be appropriate for us to pray this day the most famous prayer from the law called, the Shema. Many Jews recite this prayer which appears in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 in the morning and in the evening. I thought it would be a good idea for us to do the same this Lent. I especially like the line that tells us to impress on our children to pray.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
32. Greatest Hits – St Francis Prayer Hi Kev, We are blessed with a wonderful team of nurses that take great care of you. I often think about what a giving, selfless person it takes to be a nurse. When I read the famous prayer of St Francis it reminds me of our nurses.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
33. Greatest Hits – Novena to the Sacred Heart Hi Kev I was trying to find the right prayer for today when mom walked over to my desk and said look what I found. It is a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the back, there is a small note saying “Kevin found this at the bus stop”. You must have picked it up off the ground years ago and given it to her. Mom saves everything. Now we have true devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and that picture on almost every entry and exit to our house. Also on the back are two prayers:
Novena To the Sacred Heart of Jesus O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore You, I love You and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer You this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient of Your will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in You and for You. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death.
The Promises of Our Lord – to Saint Margaret Mary For Souls Devoted to His Sacred Heart

I will comfort them in all their afflictions

Tepid Souls shall grow fervent

34. Greatest Hits – Divine Mercy Chaplet Hi Kev, I am learning more and more about the Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet. It's a very special prayer that Our Lord gave St Faustina from Poland and has special meaning when said the nine days before Divine Mercy Sunday. This year Divine Mercy Sunday falls on your 21st birthday, May 1st. That's also the day our last Pope, John Paul II will be beatified - a step to becoming a saint. A lot going on and a great time for a miracle.
Back up nine days and the prayer would start tomorrow on Good Friday. I will ask everyone who knows the Divine Mercy Chaplet to say it for nine days starting tomorrow as a birthday gift to you. What better gift?
The Chaplet of Mercy is prayed using ordinary rosary beads.
1. Make the Sign of the Cross. 2. Optional Opening Prayers You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You! 3. Our Father 4. Hail Mary 5. The Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6. The Eternal Father Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 7. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 8. Repeat for the remaining decades Saying the "Eternal Father" (6) on the "Our Father" bead and then 10 "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (7) on the following "Hail Mary" beads. 9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 10. Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

36. Greatest Hits - The Journey of Hope Rosary Each year in early August from 2010-2019 we hosted a fundraiser at Kevin’s high school, Christian Brother’s Academy, called “Walk the Walk with Kevin”. We would walk a few laps around the track and then friends and family would sit in the grass and say the Rosary. Over time this was the version of the Rosary that we would say. Four of the decades are dedicated to the four Mysteries, Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious, and on the 5th decade we reflect on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. A brief quote from Scripture is recited before each Hail Mary during the 5 decades that focuses on the topic of that decade. Sometimes hundreds gathered at CBA with Kevin for this beautiful tradition.
Hi Kev, I remember back to when you were at the Jersey Shore Hospital. They set up a waiting room for us and we camped out for what seemed like weeks. Your friends would come and play cards, board games and pray. Friends and relatives saying the rosary night and day is my fondest memory. It brought us peace at a time when our world was turned upside down. I will ask families of every religion to pray together on Sunday nights for families and for healing. Yesterday we asked St Joseph to intercede on your behalf. Today will ask the Blessed Mother to intercede for us through the Rosary.
1. Make the Sign of the Cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2. Amen. 3. Our Father 4. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we sendup our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Conclusion
37. Conclusion – Easter Sunday Hi Kev, Tomorrow is Easter Sunday. We have been praying for you every day during Lent. We have said prayers asking for healing, prayers of praise, prayers of thanks, and prayers asking for forgiveness. We have prayed to God, to Jesus, and for the intercession of the saints. While I was in the shower this morning it occurred to me that the one form of prayer that we haven't done is listening. That's not entirely true because it was probably God that told me I wasn't listening when I thought of it in the shower. Anyway, I'm going to ask everyone to just spend 10-15 minutes in a quiet place and let God speak to them. Happy Easter Kev – He is Risen!
To conclude the Journey of Hope Prayer Book let’s reflect on a message from the Blessed Mother from Medjugorje.
38. Conclusion – Message from Medjugorje Hi Kev, Today, April 2nd, 2011, Our Lady appeared to the visionary Mirjana Soldo in Medjugorje and gave the following message:
"Dear children; with motherly love I desire to open the heart of each of you and to teach you personal unity with The Father. To accept this, you must comprehend that you are important to God and that He is calling you individually. You must comprehend that your prayer is a conversation of a child with The Father; that love is the way by which you must set out - love for God and for your neighbor. That is, my children, the love that has no boundaries, that is the love that emanates from truth and goes to the end. Follow me, my children, so that also others, in recognizing the truth and love in you, may follow you. Thank you."
39. Conclusion – Jesus I Trust in You 40. Conclusion – Amen
